Help came too late for kitten Nollie after train adventure: ‘She wasn’t strong enough after all’

It’s an adventure that deserves a better ending. The story of the kittens Nellie and Nollie, left behind on the train, seems to end with a successful rescue, but help for Nollie comes too late.

The little kitten is probably not strong enough to survive due to malnutrition.

It happens in early August. On the train from Breda to Zwolle, a passenger sits with a box on her lap containing two black kittens. At one point the woman stands up and asks a fellow passenger if she would like to look after the cats because she has to go to the toilet.

But instead of visiting the toilet, the woman gets off at the next station. The temporary cat sitter is left bewildered.

The animal ambulance takes both animals to the shelter in Beilen. As a volunteer at the animal shelter, Miranda Schonewille often experiences animal dumping, but when Nellie and Nollie are delivered by the animal ambulance, she still has to swallow. “I wouldn’t have the heart to do it,” she says.

Yet she is also happy that the kittens are brought to the shelter. “This lady could have done something else with the animals, she consciously chose to seek help, and I think that’s a good thing.”
