The police arrested a 22-year-old man from Helmond in his hometown on Tuesday evening because he wanted to travel to participate in the armed struggle of the terrorist group Islamic State (IS). The man may be on his way to East Africa, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) reports.
The arrest took place after information from the General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD). The Public Prosecution Service leaves it unclear what exactly the man planned to do and which country he wanted to travel to.

The suspect was arrested by the Special Interventions Service (DSI). There are no further details about the arrest. De Helmonder will be brought before the examining magistrate on Friday. The police are further investigating the case.
