Hélène Hendriks faces a major test with ‘De Oranjezomer’. ‘Being involved in sports doesn’t feel like work to me’ | interview

Summer TV remains a challenge. Hélène Hendriks entered into it with the daily talk show ‘De Oranjezomer’: ,,I’m going to find out how hard it is, but doing sports doesn’t feel like work to me.”

Actually, the recordings of the SBS6 program were there The Orange Summer planned by Hélène Hendriks on a family park, but it has become her own Breda. The midweek broadcast will be broadcast from the heart of the city center this week and for the next five weeks. “We couldn’t complete the holiday park, which was a pity, because I love a holiday at the campsite myself. But Breda is of course also very nice for me. People can just walk by on the Kasteelplein. So then something unexpected can happen in a positive way, that’s nice.” Hendriks especially wanted to avoid the Hilversum Media Park. “In any case, it is good to make something somewhere else in the country than always at the Mediapark or in Amsterdam. And I also preferred not to be in a studio, so that you have a bit of commotion around it.”

Hendriks follows with her Orange summer – in which sports and news are discussed daily with various table guests – a rather atypical evening program on SBS6 on: Marcel & Gijs . The commercial trip of that NPO duo is over. The reactions to the program by Marcel van Roosmalen and Gijs Groenteman were mixed, but Hendriks sees a follow-up in the future. “Those two were actually fine. And the ratings were pretty good, so why wouldn’t it be worth repeating?”

Youri Mulder, very enthusiastic

Summer TV remains a challenge, captivating the viewer while also being able to go out is not always easy. Previous editions of The Orange Summer , with the men of VI , scored well. With the Tour de France, the Women’s World Cup, Wimbledon, Formula 1 and the qualifying matches of the European club tournaments, there seems to be plenty to discuss at least in the field of sports. “Of course we are not going to do anything earth-shattering. We just do a talk show and we try to do that in a very light-hearted and topical way.”

Every week a guest sits opposite Hendriks at the head of the table, who stays for the whole week. Özcan Akyol, Rutger Castricum, Fidan Ekiz and Youri Mulder will in any case fulfill that role. Estavana Polman, Klaas Dijkhoff, Raven van Dorst, Sam Hagens, Jan de Hoop, Frank Evenblij, Roxane Knetemann and Leontien van Moorsel also pass by.

Youri Mulder is a striking name. “Of course everyone knows his father, Jan Mulder, who was always nice and outspoken at the table DWDD . And Youri was also very enthusiastic when we asked him. He is very broadly oriented in terms of news. I myself am a news junkie who checks everything from early in the morning. I am confident that it will work.”

‘Six weeks is manageable’

The busy weeks follow for Hendriks shortly after a sad period. Her father died a few months ago after a short illness. “Everyone, I think, is sad when their father dies, but my father was in so much pain that we were all happy that he has found peace. And as a family we have a lot of support for each other. My mother lives close to me, she is also super strong.”

Hendriks previously made quite a few meters as a talk show presenter when Johnny de Mol temporarily dropped out HLF8 due to private problems, but Hendriks has never presented a program for as long in a row as this summer. “Fortunately, six weeks is really manageable. I think it’s great how Eva Jinek and someone like Jeroen Pauw can do that for months in a row. Of course you always have to be on.”

But Hendriks generally does not need much time to recharge, a holiday is not yet planned after the program. “Having a nice lunch or having a coffee somewhere with a friend, that is already recharging for me. I’m going to find out how hard it is, but doing sports doesn’t feel like work to me. I find that the most fun thing to do.”
