Hélène Hendriks corrects ‘acorn’ Duncan Laurence after TV tear

Hélène Hendriks corrects Duncan Laurence, according to Johan Derksen a ‘jerk’, after his TV tear at Khalid & Sophie. “He does make a mistake there. It’s not about them.”

Duncan Laurence was the mentor involved last night in the talk show Khalid & Sophie, where the out of tune Eurovision couple Mia & Dion gave a performance. They have removed all the difficult notes from their song and are now able to do it perform without damaging the listener’s eardrums. Cheers.

Bit sad

Well, chapeau… It’s actually a bit sad, says media journalist Jef Willemsen. He tweets: “So the song as written was always too ambitious for them and the solution is to lower the bar and simplify things? Phew-ouch. That feels like a self-imposed disqualification. ‘We can’t do it… only with help.’”

He continues: “I think it shows insufficient critical self-insight if after six months of practicing (or ‘struggling’ as they say) you can only admit after two failed live performances that the song in its current form does not suit you. Right now it seems as if they are opting for safety.”

Crying Duncan

Apparently Duncan was so shocked that Mia and Dion can also sing in tune that he couldn’t hold back his tears after their performance. He was very emotional when the camera was on him. “It went really well for me. I don’t care anymore what everyone says about it or whoever says about it. You are stars to me.”

Mia: “Oh, now I have to cry too.”

Hostess Sophie Hilbrand: “It also moves you a bit, doesn’t it?”

Duncan: “Yes, very much, yes.”

Mia: “I also have tears in my eyes now.”

‘all about them’

Ehh, Duncan no longer cares what the rest of the Netherlands thinks? Do they realize that they represent our country or do they see this as their hobby project? EenToday star Lammert de Bruin tweets: “This entry is very self-involved. There, I said it.”

Lammert gets itchy. “That Duncan does not take any responsibility for his role in the whole, but hides behind all kinds of excuses, is a great pity.”

And Story boss Guido den Aantractor tweets: “These Eurovision wokies only talk about ‘me’. Don’t hear anyone say they represent the Netherlands. It’s all about them.”

Helen critically

Hélène Hendriks also reacts critically. She says in Inside today: “Duncan does make a mistake. He says: ‘I don’t care anymore’, but it’s just… They represent the Netherlands, don’t they? They represent us. It’s not about them alone.”

Colleague René van der Gijp: “Of course he cares a lot. This is just tough acting.”

Wilfred Genee: “It bothers him, you mean?”

René: “Of course. Otherwise you won’t sit and cry.”

Jellyfish and acorn

What does Johan Derksen think of it? “I also think it’s a bit of a jellyfish the way he behaved. What a jerk, dude. Everyone gets a lot thrown at them. We also get a lot on us. Then you should be a big boy. Come on!”

Wilfred: “It is, yes.”

Johan: “Mr. Duncan Laurence is getting something over him. Well, so what?!”

Big shoes

Ronald Molendijk is also annoyed by Duncan’s complaints about outside criticism. He says in Show news: “Then I also think: welcome to the grown-up world. If you want to put yourself in the shoes of Eurovision participants, then you should not think that only Miep from three-high-behind thinks something about it.”

Beau van Erven Dorens saw that Duncan was clearly nervous about Mia and Dion’s performance. He remarks on his talk show: “He had his shirt open all the way to his navel because of the heat.”
