Heisa Frontnacht continues to reverberate: “We are in Ypres, the city of peace. How in God’s name can you tolerate something like that?”

“We are in Ypres, city of peace. I’ve lived all my life, next to the Menin Gate. How in God’s name can you tolerate that in Ypres? It’s not okay. For a city like Ypres, I think it’s a shame that that can even be on the table come,” says Ypres Niels Bevernage.

Tourists also heard about the frenzy surrounding Frontnacht.

“I find it difficult at this time that they still allow that. Everyone has their own opinion. But if there is a danger that it will generate something, I would think that is a shame for the city of peace.”

Former mayor Jan Durnez of opposition party CD&V believes that the city should never have granted a permit in the first place. He fears for the image of Peace City Ypres. Open Ypres says that they have immediately taken the house position.
