Rare press conference from FCH boss

CEO Holger Sanwald has expressed his confidence in coach Frank Schmidt despite the weak start to the season by Bundesliga bottom club 1. FC Heidenheim. “He has our full support,” said Sanwald before the game at 1. FC Union Berlin on Saturday (3:30 p.m./Sky).

The 58-year-old usually stays away from the press conferences before the games. However, five points from eleven games prompted Sanwald to take a stand on the sporting crisis. While coach Schmidt is not up for discussion, the official increased the pressure on the FCH professionals.

With the exception of the goalkeeper position, the club management is examining options for all other parts of the team in the upcoming change period, said Sanwald. “It needs new impulses. But we’re now also looking to see whether the boys can promote themselves in the four games before the break. Otherwise it could be that they have one more competitor in January.” Most recently, Heidenheim suffered a 6-0 defeat in Leverkusen and a 3-0 defeat at home against Gladbach.

Schmidt, who also sat on the podium, tried to exude confidence. “We must not sink into ourselves or self-pity, but must be prepared to take the reins of action,” said the longest-serving Bundesliga coach. So far, FCH is still waiting for its first point away this season. Changes are possible, the clocks have been set back, said Schmidt. In the capital he has to do without attacker Budu Zivzivadze (31), who has knee problems.

Big words from Holle at the PK!
Basically, if we don’t completely shave off everything in the next four games, there will definitely be additions that will strengthen us immediately. I think that a little self-criticism about the approach last summer (meaning: “We consciously don’t WANT a Szienca replacement”) wouldn’t have hurt. Frank Schmidt’s legendary status would certainly not have crumbled as a result.
It doesn’t sound like you really want to get rid of someone, but rather you…
