In the championship final last season, sporting director Christian Heidel from FSV Mainz 05 said he “got more in the face in all directions”.
The team from Mainz had fought a 2-2 draw at Borussia Dortmund on the last day of the game, making FC Bayern Munich the German soccer champions.
Before the game it was only said that Mainz had lost four times in a row. However, Heidel pointed out that the Rheinhessen team had already defeated FC Bayern. “And then threw everything in again on the last day of the game to simply show sporting fairness. If anyone deserves the fairness trophy this year, it’s Mainz,” Heidel told Sky TV.
Of course it was a disaster for Dortmund. “But we didn’t run around and do laps of honor in front of our fans because we saw and felt it,” said Heidel. “We were sorry too. Nevertheless, the team threw everything into it and decided the championship as a result.”
