“It is not so much the building, but the entire complex,” says Frans Schouten, chairman of Heemschut Drenthe. “This is based on a post-war modern vision. Those low houses further up there are also part of it, they are by the same architect. Houses for families, the elderly, singles. Inside there is a common green space intended for children to play and for mothers to there to explain the laundry.”
“We are talking about 1955, women hardly worked outside the home, were housebound. If you look around you, you see a lot of greenery. There is a staircase in front of the flat. We don’t do that anymore, because it is very unfriendly for the disabled, but it was then intended as something dignified, such a staircase to your first floor,” says Schouten.
