THE high heels are not for everyone. «Only if the arch of the foot is neither flat nor too hollow, in fact, can you wear high heels without feeling discomfort which quickly turns into pain, as the conformation of the footbed in the shoe manages to maintain its natural shape” explains Bruno Magnan, professor of orthopedics and traumatology at the University of Verona.
Heels and sore feet, in the long run we all suffer from them
But also those who habitually wear a 10-12 centimeter heel with ease over time it risks some inconvenience.
«The high heel favors hallux valgus in those who are already predisposed to protrusion of the base of the big toe – explains Magnan -. Chronic overload of the joints in the middle of the dorsum of the footand, furthermore, it can cause joint inflammation to the point of causing arthrosis which requires surgical treatment. A stiletto heel or an oblique forward support makes it less stable and can lead to sprains or fractures of the ankle. In the long run there is also the risk of postural effectsi, minimal in those who have a healthy spine but significant in those who suffer from previous stiffness in the lumbar area”.
Does the plateau make a difference?
«It cushions the pressure of the forward foot, reducing the sense of fatigue. They are always preferable footwear with a thin soft pad in the front».
Advice for safe use of 10 or 12 heel?
