Poor thing! Hedgehog Benno had to have his broken leg amputated.
On October 10, a 14-year-old found him in his parents’ garden and brought the injured animal to the home. “We don’t know how the injury occurred, whether it was caused by a robotic lawnmower or whether it was hit,” says an employee of the animal shelter.
Bruno, a young animal, weighed just 326 grams when he was admitted. Apart from the broken left hind leg, he was healthy and free of vermin.
For the surgery, the spikes on the back leg of the hedgehog had to be shaved. He coped well with the operation under anesthesia. “He eats like a barn thresher,” says the employee. It now weighs 420 grams.
As soon as he has gained enough weight and weighs at least one kilo, he can be released back into the wild and lead a completely normal life despite his handicap.
