Heavy traffic aggression in Diksmuide
A couple driving home on Thursday night was overtaken in the Oostendestraat by a car that overtook them, at 150 kilometers per hour, to the left of the traffic island near the football field of Keiem. The couple’s husband was startled and flashed his lights. The car that overtook them braked sharply and cut the couple off the road. Then he accelerated again and braked hard again in front of the couple’s car. This happened several times.
Block passage
The couple managed to avoid a few collisions and managed to overtake the car. The man in the other car responded by driving next to the couple’s car. The man and woman were frightened and turned their car to drive home in the other direction. The aggressive man, in turn, turned his car and chased them again. The couple changed direction again and again the other car followed.
A little further on, he parked his car across the track. The couple was just able to pass through the bicycle path where the man eventually hit them. In the meantime, they called the police who asked them to drive to the Market in Diksmuide. Their aggressive assailant ran away.
Perpetrator found
The police immediately started reading all the cameras along the Oostendestraat. The car in question was then clearly visible and the number plate was also easy to read. The number plate is in the name of a man from Maasmechelen, but his 20-year-old son lives in Diksmuide. The police searched and found the damaged car. The man was removed from his home and arrested. He was locked up in the police station to be questioned later. The public prosecutor’s office classifies the incident as “attempted manslaughter” for the time being. It is not yet clear whether the man has been arrested. He has had his driver’s license for only 1.5 years and is already known to the police.
Filmed everything myself
The perpetrator turned out to have a dashcam in his car and filmed the entire event himself. The young man’s girlfriend was also sitting next to him. She urged him to stop and said enough was enough. Analysis of the images shows that he was already touring the highway earlier in the night. There he drove at 180 kilometers per hour and overtook trucks on the hard shoulder. All images and data were captured sharply. It is suspected that the man was driving under the influence. His driver’s license has already been withheld for 15 days.
