Heavy rain falls over Westhoek, underground garages flooded
While the weather was still sweltering on Tuesday, a local thunderstorm or a heavy shower passed over our province on Wednesday. The southern Westhoek in particular will have a hard time in the evening. The rain continues and the amount of precipitation in some places near Poperinge rises to more than 80 liters of water per square meter. Photos of flooded hop fields appear on social media. In Proven near Poperinge, more than 30 liters of precipitation fell from the air in half an hour.
Flooded garages
At the Sugar Park in Veurne, water has entered the underground garages of the ‘De Suikertoren’ apartment building. The fire brigade had to pump out the water. It has rained less heavily in the area around Veurne and on the West Coast. So far, 20 liters of water per square meter have been measured there. In the meantime it has also become dry. With an intervention in Koksijde and Nieuwpoort, the pompiers have only had to turn out three times for the time being.
