Heavy gas explosion in Ostend: three victims, many homes uninhabitable

The affected residents who cannot visit family or friends will be able to spend the night in a hotel in Ostend.

The facts took place around 11.30 am on the corner of Christinastraat and Ooststraat. There are works underway, possibly a gas pipeline was hit. There was a loud bang, followed by a flash of flame.

Three seriously injured, major material damage

In total, three people were seriously injured by the gas explosion and taken to specialized hospitals. It concerns a policeman, a firefighter and a woman who works in the building where the explosion took place.

The gas explosion in the Ooststraat also caused a lot of damage. The security services have investigated the situation on the spot. They searched for possible additional victims and checked the safety and stability of the buildings. No new victims were found.

Homes are uninhabitable

Many of the homes in Ooststraat and Christinastraat are currently uninhabitable, mainly due to glass damage. The residents of those houses will be able to enter their homes under the supervision of the security services to collect necessary items.

In the Ooststraat there are also 4 buildings uninhabitable and not accessible for security reasons. These residents will therefore not be able to enter their homes for the time being. The city of Ostend was looking for a solution for all residents of the affected buildings who cannot visit family or friends. They are offered a meal and can spend the night in a hotel in Ostend.
