Heavy gas explosion in Ostend: several victims, disaster plan announced

The facts took place around 11.30 am on the corner of Christinastraat and Ooststraat. There are works underway, possibly a gas pipeline was hit. There was a loud bang, followed by a flash of flame. The fire brigade is currently still busy with the extinguishing works.

Mayor Bart Tommelein has interrupted his work in the Flemish Parliament, he is on his way to Ostend. He is currently speaking of three injured. People are currently being taken care of in the cultural center De Grote Post. The contingency plan has been announced. A policeman and firefighter were reportedly seriously injured.

The coastal tram has also been disrupted in both directions.
