The fire started in a warehouse on the Kanaal 127 business park, which is divided into three studios. In the middle studio, which houses a car garage, an outbreak broke out just before 9 am on Saturday morning. The fire alarm went off immediately, but the garage owner had already notified the emergency services.
The fire brigade rushed to the scene, although the emergency services were first wrongly sent to the Spinnerijkaai. Once on site, it was decided to call in extra crew, but the fire brigade was able to quickly extinguish the fire. The warehouse was completely filled with smoke. “We opened the domes on the roof to let the smoke escape,” says Major Henk Vanwalleghem.
The damage in the warehouse is extensive, but the studios next to it were saved. One employee of the car garage was taken to hospital as a precaution. During the extinguishing works, the Spinnerijstraat on the border of Kortrijk and Stasegem was completely closed to traffic for a while.
