Heating costs: Roller shutter box insulation can reduce energy consumption

Insulation: roller shutter box as a potential weak point

In view of the high energy costs, many consumers are looking for ways to save on heating costs and thus money. An important factor for successful energy saving is a functioning thermal insulation in order to reduce the release of thermal energy from the interior to the outside world. Because every chain is only as strong as its weakest link, it is important to specifically insulate potential weak points where warm air can escape. These include, among other things, roller shutter boxes. Due to their construction, these are often very permeable to air and are therefore responsible for increased heating costs.

It depends on the material

With the help of simple tips and a little manual skill, however, a roller shutter box can be successfully insulated. A decisive factor is the choice of the right insulation material. The selection is diverse and offers the right product for every roller shutter box. When choosing the insulating material to be used, the structural conditions, such as the available space in the roller shutter box, should be taken into account. Styrofoam insulation panels, among other things, but also expensive components made of polyurethane or phenolic resin are available in specialist stores. Adhesive and construction foam are also required to attach the insulation material. The costs are around 50 euros per roller shutter box, depending on the material used.

Insulate roller shutter boxes in just a few steps

Before tenants start insulating the roller shutter box, it is essential to obtain the landlord’s permission. Such a measure is an intervention in the building fabric, for which the approval of the owner is mandatory. The landlord can insist on the work being carried out by a craftsman or leave the installation to the tenants themselves. With the help of the following instructions, you can successfully insulate the roller shutter box.

First, the roller shutter must be pulled up completely. The inspection cover is then opened with a screwdriver to gain access to the inside of the roller shutter box, where the insulating material is attached. Care should be taken to insulate all sides evenly after the box has been thoroughly cleaned beforehand. The best way to determine the exact dimensions for cutting the insulation material is to make cardboard templates beforehand to prevent gaps between the insulation panels. Finally, there is the option of insulating the belt guide of the roller shutter with brush seals or the associated covers with silicone or sealing tape.
