Health insurance premiums are going up: 6 tips to choose the cheapest

Health insurers have announced the premiums for basic insurance. Next year, the insurance will cost between 7.75 euros and 9.30 euros per month more. Insurers call it inevitable due to the high (personnel) costs and the aging population. How do you get the lowest possible premium? Our tips.

1. Cheap is expensive
Don’t just look at the price, but also at which care suits you best. Make sure that you choose an insurance policy that includes a healthcare provider that you need. With some insurance policies, your coverage only applies to certain hospitals or practices.

2. What do you need?
If you only take out (mandatory) basic insurance, your monthly costs will be the lowest. For example, are you not easily injured? Then additional insurance for physiotherapy is not necessary. You can also look at what the costs would be if you did need the care: if you can pay for a possible physio appointment yourself, you do not have to take out insurance for it.

3. increase your deductible
Everyone is obliged to have a deductible of at least 385 euros. The higher your deductible, the lower your monthly premium. So if you do not expect to need as much care in the new year, you can increase your deductible.

4. see if you can pay annually
By transferring your health insurance for the whole year in one go, instead of paying monthly, you get a discount from your health insurer. In 2023, that will give you around two or three percent discount. Every little bit helps!

5. Right to health care allowance?
It may just be that you were not entitled to a healthcare allowance in 2022, but that the rules have changed in the new year, so that you are eligible in the new year. You can check each year whether you are entitled to healthcare allowance via the website of the tax authorities.

6. Compare!
It is therefore especially important to look carefully at what you think you will need in the coming year. Do you still find it difficult to choose? Fortunately, there are various comparison websites such as the Zorgwijzer or Independer. Here you can fill in your wishes and you will get an overview of the best and cheapest options.
