Head of gaming software company Unity leaves after dispute over pricing model

SAN FRANCISCO (dpa-AFX) – The head of the game software provider Unity (Unity Software), John Riccitello, is leaving after the controversy over a new pricing model that has turned games developers against the company. The former boss of the software provider Red Hat, James Whitehurst, will temporarily take over the position, Unity announced on Tuesday night. Unity provides a so-called game engine, a software environment in which the game is developed and displayed. This makes the company a key partner for many game providers.

In September, Unity introduced a new pricing model. The core was that developers should pay a fee every time their game is installed after they exceed the 200,000 download mark or $200,000 in sales. Those affected criticized, among other things, the fact that this should also apply to free games – and that it would hit small providers particularly hard. Some developers announced they would move to competing game engine platforms.

After the uproar in the industry, some of the changes have already been scaled back. Unity left the controversy unmentioned in the announcement of Riccitiello’s departure./so/DP/zb
