Lawrence Shankland, 28-year-old Hearts of Midlothian captain and Scotland international faced rival Hibernian fans eye to eye: he caught a cake thrown at him after scoring a penalty, took a bite and threw it back.

His manager, Steven Naismith, later condemned the “idiots” who threw a number of objects at the attacker – including reportedly a bottle opener, a lighter and a pair of Apple AirPods – as he waited to kick the ball penalty in Hearts’ equalizer at home to Hibs. Hearts’ top scorer had to hold his nerve before taking the penalty just before half-time after objects rained down on him from the stand housing Hibernian fans behind the goal.
Shankland’s penalty, controversially awarded after Hearts striker Kenneth Vargas fell while trying to clear Will Fish, just before half-time equalized Marcondes’ 27th-minute opener for Hibernian. Final one-to-one, with no other goals in the second half. Hearts remain third with 52 points, with Hibernian seventh on 31.
