‘He compromises his integrity’

Did Noa Vahle hear that right? Has she been praised somewhere again? Yes, this time Jack van Gelder plays his part – he just gets emotional when he hears her talk. “Integrity at stake!”

It is so 2023: Noa Vahle, the daughter of Linda de Mol, who is ostentatiously applauded by all her SBS 6 colleagues. What a fantastic job she is doing, how wonderful she is, what a natural talent! Apparently Jack van Gelder doesn’t think it’s enough, because he started to praise Noa again last week, this time in Hélène Hendriks’ talk show.

Very ordinary

Hélène then had a live conversation with Noa, something boring about sports, and then Jack immediately sang his praises again. Media critic Victor Vlam finds it tiring. “When she appears in Today Inside or De Oranjewinter, she is often ostentatiously praised by all kinds of guests,” he says in the podcast The Communicados.

He continues: “She’s often praised for being natural, speaking very clearly and all those things. And that happened again last week, because she was on the air, she had done an ordinary stand-up at some skating competition. Yes, nothing technically went wrong, so there was nothing wrong with it. At the same time, it wasn’t really special.”

Countless times

Noa’s talent is really exaggerated, according to Victor. “Because being a stand-up is something that happens countless times every day in all kinds of current affairs programs. I didn’t think it was special. But Jack van Gelder, he goes crazy on her, as if she has just invented a cure for cancer. He praises her to the heavens.”

Victor then plays Jack’s fragment. “I just want to let you know, I find it so uncomfortable. Guests really need to stop doing this. This is how Jack did it.”

We hear Jack say, among other things: “So handsome, huh? There isn’t an ‘uh’ in her entire story. It just continues.”

Integrity at stake

This really has to stop, says Victor. “Yes, Jesus, guys, come on. Jack van Gelder does this to please Uncle John. That’s why he does that. Other guests on that program do that too. I really don’t think they realize how ugly this is. This comes across so badly to the viewer, because you are really compromising your integrity.”

He concludes: “If you do this, you are essentially saying: I am prepared to say whatever it takes to keep my job here. It’s a way to immediately make yourself a little less credible. So I would really advise everyone to stop doing this. This isn’t a terribly good thing to do. Stop this, guys.”
