Dirk Nowitzki ended his remarkable career in 2019 after 20 years with the Dallas Mavericks. In retrospect, however, the basketball legend wonders if he shouldn’t have drawn the line sooner.
With persistent foot problems, Dirk Nowitzki wonders if he shouldn’t have ended his basketball career sooner. “Would you have had to play for the last two years? Maybe my foot would be a bit better now, I could kick with the kids, that’s just not possible anymore,” said the 43-year-old in the podcast “Einfach mal luppen”. Brothers Toni and Felix Kroos.
Nowitzki now prefers the tennis court to the basketball court
Born in Würzburg, Nowitzki ended his career in 2019 after 20 years with the Dallas Mavericks. In 2011 he celebrated the championship in the North American professional league NBA with the Texans. It is still the only title in the team’s history.
“My foot is really bad, there are days when I don’t move well at all,” continued the former captain of the German national basketball team. That’s one of the reasons why he explained: “I’m thinking, the last two years have really been worth it. We haven’t achieved anything as a team, that’s going through my head a bit.”
He does sport as a private individual – Nowitzki still lives in Dallas with his wife Jessica and their children – only on the tennis court: “It’s fun to stand at the back of the baseline and thunder a few balls forward,” says Nowitzki, “but Unfortunately, I can’t move much anymore.”
