HBL: THW Kiel is taking a big step towards the championship

THW Kiel won the northern derby in the handball Bundesliga at HSV Hamburg.

The leader prevailed in the table sixth with 34:30 (20:16) and thus made a big step towards the 23rd championship.

In front of 12,000 spectators in the Hamburg Arena, Nikola Bilyk was the best thrower for Kiel with nine goals. Frederik Bo Andersen scored seven goals for the hosts.

Hamburg tried to compensate for their physical inferiority with a lot of speed in attack. Dani Baijens in particular solved this task excellently as a right-hander in the right backcourt. Already in the tenth minute, however, the Hamburg defensive specialist Tobias Schimmelbauer saw the red card after a too hard challenge against THW captain Domagoj Duvnjak.

Towards the end of the first half, Kiel then took control and took a 17:14 lead thanks to a goal from Petter Överby (26th). After the break, the record champions’ advantage quickly grew to six goals (23:17/34). The HSVH fought self-sacrificing, but was only able to reduce the gap a little.

Before the game, Hamburg had announced the premature extension of the contract with the currently injured Danish international Jacob Lassen. The backcourt left-hander will stay in the Hanseatic city until June 30, 2026.
