A spectacular accident on the A2 near Swartbroek on Saturday afternoon did not cause any injuries, but did lead to a lot of damage. An empty horse trailer bounced over the guard rail in the central reservation to the other side of the road.
It went wrong around 4:45 pm after a motorist driving north had put the car on the hard shoulder to staunch a spontaneous nosebleed.
Debris
The driver of an approaching car with a horse trailer drove so far to the right that the wheel of the trailer collided with the stationary car. The trailer came loose and ricocheted violently over the crash barrier into the side of the road towards Maastricht. The impact also caused a wheel to break loose, which again crashed into a third vehicle. That went so fast that the airbags of this car also exploded. But like the occupants of the first two cars, no one was injured here either.
The havoc was great. Traffic had to use one lane in both directions of travel. Rijkswaterstaat is still investigating whether urgent repairs are needed to the road surface.
