Havertz’s sobering Chelsea conclusion: “Everything went wrong” – additions have to settle in

Before derby against Arsenal

The German national player Kai Havertz drew a sobering conclusion six games before the end of the season in the English Premier League. “Everything that can go wrong went wrong for us this year,” said the Chelsea FC professional on Sky TV. The season started quietly, “then Thomas Tuchel was fired relatively early in the season. That always does something to a team – if you’ve been successful with the coach, but then he’s fired relatively quickly and out of nowhere.”

After a good phase under Graham Potter’s successor, the World Cup caused a break, and the next change of coach to Frank Lampard was not easy either. “Now we have our backs to the wall and not very well in the table. So it has to be said that a lot went wrong. We got a lot of new players over the winter who first have to settle in with us in order to be able to call up their quality,” complained Havertz, who switched from Bayer 04 Leverkusen to the Thames in 2020 for 80 million euros and still has a contract until 2025 owns. But he didn’t want to make any excuses.

In winter alone, the Blues spent more than 300 million euros on seven new players under new club boss Todd Boehly (overview). With the most expensive squad in the world after transfer costs and the second most valuable after Manchester City in terms of market values, the Londoners only rank 12th in the Premier League table and are unlikely to be represented internationally in the coming season. In total, the Londoners paid 997 million euros in transfers for their current squad and this calculation does not include expenses for currently loaned transfer flops such as Romelu Lukaku (Inter) or Tiemoué Bakayoko (Milan), which together cost over 150 million euros. For comparison: The current professional squad of FC Bayern (€449m) and league leaders Arsenal (€532m) together cost less than the Blues team (on the purchase value statistics).

Chelsea FC: Havertz wants to “make the fans happy again”

Eight loanees will return in 2023/24 with a market value of €118m, while the likes of João Félix (Atlético) and Denis Zakaria (Juventus) could go. All in all, a team of almost 40 men awaits Lampard’s successor today. According to reports, the Blues want to part with some players by June 30 in order to have the transfer proceeds included in the balance sheet for the 2022/23 season – the English transfer window should open in the second week of June.

In the Champions League, the club from Stamford Bridge was over in the quarter-finals against Real Madrid. “Now we have to try to make the best of the last six games and try to make the fans happy again,” said Havertz, who after his knee injury in the London derby against Arsenal on Tuesday (from 9 p.m. in the TM live ticker) wants to play again.
