Have they punished ‘Alcarràs’ for something that escapes us? Is it normal that the film chosen by the Spanish Film Academy to compete for the Oscar for best foreign film, in addition to being the winner of the Golden Bear in Berlin, leaves completely empty after having been nominated in 11 categories? Some awards have been unquestionably “political & rdquor; (those of revelation actor and revelation actress), and some decisions also seem so. Or is it about awarding the film that collects the most at the box office? I’ve read full-blown humiliation hot comments. Maybe exaggerated.
It is not, far from it, a matter of comparing ‘As bestas’ and ‘Alcarràs’. They are different and both have many good things. I also find it unfair that there polarized an apparent confrontation –something alien, of course, to those responsible for both films–, almost forgetting ‘La maternal’, ‘Cinco lobitos’ and ‘Modelo 77’. Oblivion regarding the real possibilities of being considered the best films of the year according to the votes of those who make Spanish cinema, because ‘Cinco littleos’ did not go badly with the Goya for best new director, supporting actress and leading actress, and ‘Modelo 77’ swept several of the awards for which a film is recognized for its neatness and truthfulness in reconstructing a bygone era: the representation of the Barcelona Model prison of 1977 has reported to the film by Alberto Rodríguez the awards for best makeup and hairdressing, artistic direction, costumes, special effects and production direction
It doesn’t seem strange to me that ‘As bestas’ was the absolute winnerbecause although it has won in nine of the 17 categories to which it opted, it has taken the most important ones, film and direction, as well as script, photography, music, editing, sound, supporting actor (Luis Zahera) and leading actor ( Denis Ménochet, thus completing a very French gala, since ‘As bestas’ is a co-production with the neighboring country and the international Goya went to Juliette Binoche). Yes, it seems to me that the most internationally awarded film such as ‘Alcarràs’ –and Spanish cinema does not have plenty of awards as resounding as a Berlin Golden Bear– I don’t have a single recognition.

When she was chosen to compete at the Oscars, what did they think of her? It seems that in the Goya there is a type of independent cinema that does not go well at all. Because the other flagrant case is that of ‘Pacifiction’. Nor is it very normal for a film from here to be one of the most nominated for the next French César Awards and has not been in a single Goya nomination. JA Bayonnewhose style is diametrically different from that of Albert Serra, was in charge of remembering it when he took the stage to give the award for best director.
The cinema belongs to the filmmakers, whatever genre they practice, and Carla Simón is one of the most important currently in this country. Awards are like opinions, there is something for everyone. I’m not complaining at all that she will win ‘As bestas’ so much, even if she doesn’t share some of the awards she has won. I complain that the Spanish Academy sells ‘Alcarràs’ as an important film and then leaves it in a corner along the way. Spanish cinema needs good authors, technicians, a more solid industrial fabric, blockbusters and successes outside our borders. And it needs a little more balance when, especially as has been the case this year, the harvest has been so good.
