‘Have the extra-long trucks failed?’ | Question answer

Car editor Niek Schenk answers: ‘On the contrary. There are now almost three thousand of these longer and/or heavier trucks (LHVs) in use and that number is still increasing. Yes, it is more difficult to drive, but LHVs are cheaper to use and cause less CO2 emissions, because one car can carry more load. With a special exemption, such an LHV may only be used on a limited number of routes, in order to prevent difficult or dangerous situations. Transporter organization TLN argues in favor of more routes, because some loading and unloading locations are now inaccessible.’
