Harry Styles has released the first single from his new album HARRY’S HOUSE. In “As It Was” he mourns a broken relationship over a soft, reverberant synth melody.
“Nothing to say/ And everything gets in the way/ Seems you cannot be replaced,” he sings, repeating: “You know it’s not the same as it was.” To go with the single release, the singer also released a music video for “As It Was.”
In the clip, Styles performs an atmospheric interpretation dance in a sequined red jumpsuit while his dance partner dances in a blue costume of her own. Here you can hear the new single in the stream:
The music video was directed by Ukrainian director Tanu Muino, who is also nominated for a Grammy Award this year. “Directing a Harry Styles video was a dream come true for me as he is my favorite actor,” Muino said in a statement.
“Shooting it was bittersweet as it was one of the happiest days of my life, but on the second day of shooting, my country, Ukraine, was invaded, so you can imagine the insane emotions we had while shooting. Me and my team from Ukraine put so much love into this video and you can see it on the screen. It’s going to be a music video I’ll never forget.” Now she’s happy to retire, she jokingly added.
Styles’ third studio album, HARRY’S HOUSE, is scheduled for release on May 20th. It follows FINE LINE, which was released in 2019. The new record’s title is inspired by the Joni Mitchell song “Harry’s House” from their 1975 album THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS. Styles has previously admitted he was “in a pretty big Joni hole” when he recorded FINE LINE.
The new album is now available digitally and physically here be pre-ordered. In addition, exclusive album configurations should be available; including a clear yellow vinyl edition and a sea green vinyl version.
From June he will embark on a UK and European tour which will also feature Mitski and Wolf Alice. The tour will also take him to Germany for four concerts. Tickets for the tour are available here. Before that, however, the singer can still be seen as a headliner at the Coachella Festival on April 15th and 21st.
