Harry Kane draws level with Rooney

Captain Harry Kane drew level with Wayne Rooney at the World Cup in Qatar.

The 29-year-old striker from Tottenham Hotspur scored a penalty kick in the 54th minute against defending champions France in the World Cup quarter-finals to make it 1-1 (final score 1-2) and thus scored his 53rd goal in the national jersey. Rooney also comes up with the same amount, but he needed 120 games for it.

Kane, who was the top scorer at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, did so with the win at Al-Bait Stadium in Al-Khour in just his 80th game. Behind Rooney and Kane are Bobby Charlton (49 goals) and Gary Lineker (48).

Kane had previously secured the record as England’s sole top scorer in major tournaments with a goal in the round of 16 on Sunday. Kane now has 12 goals at World and European Championships, ahead of Lineker (10).
