The Haringvliet Bridge on the A29 between West Brabant and Rotterdam will be closed in both directions from ten o’clock on Friday evening until five o’clock on Monday morning. This is happening partly because the safety of the bridge is being tested. For example, the speed at which the bridge opens and closes and the speed at which the bridge valve comes to a stop in an emergency situation are tested. Furthermore, part of the highway will be asphalted.
The highway will be closed between the Oud-Beijerland entrance and exit and the Hellegatsplein junction. The parallel lane will also be closed to traffic. Rijkswaterstaat reports that the stretch of road that is being closed is longer than usual.
For pedestrians, cyclists and moped riders, a ferry operates on Saturdays and Sundays between a beach on the north side near Numansdorp and the Hellegatsplein recreation area.
The bridge was closed to all traffic from June 9 to August 4 due to major maintenance. The movable part of the bridge, among other things, received a major overhaul. Long traffic jams regularly occurred on diversion routes, such as on the A17 and A16 motorways. That could also happen this weekend.
