Hard accusation Magnus Carlsen gives new dimension to chess war: “Niemann cheated more often” | More Sports

To play chessThe chess riot surrounding Hans Niemann has taken on a new dimension now that Magnus Carlsen has openly accused the American of cheating. In an extensive statement, the Norwegian world champion says that he never wants to play chess against him again. “Niemann has cheated more than he has publicly admitted.”

Watch: Carlsen leaves the game after just two moves

Carlsen withdrew after one move against Niemann in the online tournament for the Julius Bär Generation Cup last week. This led to outrage everywhere and the international chess federation FIDE felt called to address Carlsen about his behaviour. After that bizarre game, Carlsen hinted what he thought of his opponent, but kept quiet. “I hope I can say something more after the tournament,” said the Norwegian, who previously suffered a striking defeat against Niemann in the St. Louis Sinquefeld Cup.

So he has now done that. Carlsen makes an extensive statement via social media. “I believe that cheating in chess is a major problem and an existential threat to the game,” said Carlsen. “I also believe that chess organizers and all people who respect the sanctity of the game we love should seriously consider the safety measures and methods for cheat detection on the chessboard.”

He had all his doubts about Niemann. “When Niemann was invited to the 2022 Sinquefield Cup at the last minute, I strongly considered withdrawing from the event. In the end I chose to play.”

In the way in which he subsequently lost without a chance, he saw the proof that Niemann had to cheat. “I believe Niemann has cheated more – and more recently – than he has publicly admitted. His progress was unusual and during our game in the Sinquefield Cup I had the impression that he was not tense or even fully concentrated, while he outplayed me with black in a way that only a handful of chess players are capable of. This match completely changed my image of him.”

Carlsen is done with types like Niemann. “We have to do something about cheating. I don’t want to play against people who have cheated repeatedly in the past because I don’t know what they can do in the future.” Niemann previously admitted to having committed fraud in online parties as a child. The story goes that he may have worked with transmitters or had gained insight into Carlsen’s preparation through a hack, although there is no clear evidence for this.

The last word has not yet been said. Carlsen: “There is more that I like to tell. Unfortunately, I am currently limited in what I can say without Niemann’s express permission to speak openly. So far I have only been able to speak with my actions, and those actions have clearly stated that I am not willing to play chess with Niemann. I hope the truth on this matter comes to light, whatever it may be.”
