‘Remembrance is now more important than ever’

Renate Rubinstein was ten years old when her father was arrested at home in Amsterdam on 10 July 1940 by two German soldiers. ‘Der Vati kommt bald wieder’, one of them said reassuringly to the girl, who would later become ‘the queen of the columns’. From then on, the child kept all the candy she was given in a shoebox. Her sacrifice would bring him back, his return would be a celebration, she didn’t give up hope.
