An entertaining game in the 2nd Bundesliga kept Hannover 96 against 1. FC Magdeburg outnumbered for a long time. In the end, the 1:2 (0:0) means the sixth game in a row without a win for Hannover.
The 96ers went into the long winter break before the World Cup as a promotion candidate. 1. FC Magdeburg, on the other hand, celebrated an important success in the fight to stay up. Coach Christian Titz’s team now has 24 points on their account, a little distance from the direct relegation zone.
Baris Atik (48th) and Luc Castaignos (61st) scored for Magdeburg’s victory. The distance to the table-17. Jahn Regensburg is now four points. Louis Schaub (69th) scored for Hanover, who were outnumbered after Fabian Kunze (55th) received a yellow-red card.
Hanover’s Kunze saw yellow-red
Magdeburg had more of the game at the beginning and initially the better chances, Hannover only became more active in the middle of the first half. After the break, Atik and Castaignos rewarded the visitors’ efforts.
Also bitter for Hannover: Kunze had to leave the field after repeated foul play. After a free kick, the goal followed, first FCM keeper Dominik Reimann parried, but Schaub was there.
Then Hannover pushed for an equaliser. But not only eleven Magdeburgers opposed it, but also 10,000 fans who had traveled with them.
With only ten men, the 96ers almost turned the game around. They put in a strong final phase and worked their way up a post header from Hendrik Weydandt (79′) and two more big chances from Schaub (81’/87′).
