Tennis pro Yannick Hanfmann reached the round of 16 for the first time at the ATP tournament in Halle/Westphalia.
The 31-year-old from Karlsruhe prevailed in the opening German duel against the strong qualifier and local hero Louis Weßels 6:4, 3:6, 6:3. In the round of 16, Hanfmann will face Russia’s Andrey Rublev, who is third, or Wu Yibing from China.
The 24-year-old Weßels, number 347 in the world, had reached the main draw of an ATP tournament for the first time in his native East Westphalia.
On Tuesday, Olympic champion Alexander Zverev will also take part in the rematch of the 2020 US Open final against Dominic Thiem (Austria) at the Terra Wortmann Open.
