Hanfmann fails in the semifinals in Mallorca

Tennis pro Yannick Hanfmann’s run of success at the ATP tournament in Mallorca only came to an end in the semifinals.

On Friday, the man from Karlsruhe lost to fourth-placed Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 6:7 (4:7), 4:6 and can actually look back with satisfaction on his dress rehearsal for the classic Wimbledon lawn.

Immediately after the match, the 31-year-old quarreled. “There was a tournament win here,” said Hanfmann, “who knows how many chances you get at this level. That’s why it’s disappointing. But from tomorrow I’ll look ahead, to Wimbledon, I can look forward to that, there will be there are good things.”

Hanfmann was in good form on Mallorca and beat the top seeded Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, among others. Hanfmann also kept up well against Mannarino, but the semifinals were over after almost two hours. Mannarino is “a player that doesn’t exist twice on the tour. He’s left-handed, he plays the balls very flat on grass, gives a big player like me a lot of nasty tasks,” said Hanfmann. Nevertheless, the defeat was ultimately “unfortunate”, he had given the opponent “a few easy” points.

Hanfmann was the only German participant in the lawn tournament on the Balearic Island, in Wimbledon he is in the main draw.
