Handrail at new benches limited sea view: “They missed the mark”

The new benches on the balconies on boulevard Paulus Loot in Zandvoort are not even finished and there is already a commotion about the railing. It blocks the view of the sea for people of average height. “It’s a gross design flaw,” Marie wrote on Facebook. Melanie also agrees. “Beautiful wood, but how can you think of such a thing?”

The benches, which should offer an unobstructed view of the beach, will be installed this week after some delay in the delivery of the materials. Most residents of Zandvoort are happy that the benches are on the ‘right side’ of the boulevard, with an unobstructed view of the beach without people walking past. But many people do not find the accompanying handrail chosen conveniently. “They missed the mark,” writes Nicole. Romanie asks the municipality to lower the balustrade.

But that’s not going to happen. According to a spokesperson for the municipality, the railing has not been placed at that height for nothing. “It’s also meant to lean against when you’re standing there. If the railing were higher, it wouldn’t be possible. And if you lower it, people will sit on it.”

The balustrade is therefore placed at an ideal leaning height, which means that the view of the sea is somewhat limited. Steel wires are also placed under the railing in the form of crosses.
