Kembit Lions has ended Achilles Bocholt’s winning streak as the winner of the BENE-League. The Belgians, who won the previous four editions of the Final4, lost 22-29 in De Maaspoort in Den Bosch to the people of Sittard.
Lions had qualified for the final battle on Saturday by beating Aalsmeer 37-36 after extra time. Despite the effort made on Saturday, Christoph Jauernik’s team looked fit against the men from Bocholt.
Bocholt opened the score, but Lions came back immediately and led 3-4. The Belgians turned the score around, but saw the Lions create a gap of two goals after 7-7. The people of Sittard could only hold on to that lead for a short time. Bocholt equalized, but Pieter Strauven made sure shortly before halftime that Lions ended the first half with a 12-13 lead.

Lions extend lead
Immediately after the break, Lions led 12-14, but Bocholt fought back. The score was even until fifteen minutes before the end. Then Lions distanced themselves and opened a four-goal gap. Rob Schmeits then blasted the ball into an empty goal from a distance and goals from Jonas Dell and Robin Leunissen increased the difference to 19-26. With a few minutes left to play, Bocholt resigned himself to the defeat against the Sittardians, who crowned themselves champion of the BENE league for the first time in seven years.
