Handball Bundesliga team Frisch Auf Göppingen has signed a successor to Markus Baur (52) in Benjamin Matschke. The 41-year-old will take over the twelfth place in the table as coach next summer and will receive a contract until 2026. The club announced this on Thursday.
“I firmly believe that together we will successfully advance and shape the rejuvenation of the team and the realignment of the club,” said Matschke, who most recently coached HSG Wetzlar.
At the end of November, Göppingen announced that the expiring contract with Baur – captain of the 2007 World Cup team – would not be extended. The decision was made after a detailed analysis of the “sporting performances and results of the last few weeks and months in our day-to-day business in the Bundesliga,” said sporting director Christian Schöne.
