Handball Bundesliga team SG Flensburg-Handewitt has to make do without backcourt player Kay Smits for the time being.
As the club announced on Saturday, the 26-year-old Dutchman had developed “subacute myocarditis”. It is still unclear how long Smits will not be available to the Bundesliga third-place team.
“We will continue to monitor his state of health with close follow-up checks, but fortunately we are assuming that the course of the disease will be mild,” said SG team doctor Dr. Torsten Ahnsel.
“Kay’s diagnosis obviously hits us hard,” said Flensburg’s managing director Holger Glandorf. Smits will not only be missing from Flensburg in the coming weeks, but will also miss the European Championships in Germany in January.
