Former Bundesliga professional Andy Schmid will be the coach of the Swiss national handball team from summer 2024. This was announced by the association.
“It’s a great honor to become the coach of my home country,” said Schmid, who was under contract with the Rhein-Neckar Löwen from 2010 to 2022. During this time, the 39-year-old was voted the best Bundesliga player five times.

With the lions, the Swiss won the championship twice, the DHB Cup and the EHF Cup once and the Supercup three times. The world-class playmaker is currently active in his home country at HC Kriens-Luzern. His contract with the leaders of the Swiss league ends in 2024, his contract as national coach is valid until the home European Championship in 2028.
High goals as a coach too
As a player, he also wants to “set the highest goals for himself as a coach. And in order to achieve these goals, I will act with the same passion and dedication as if I were still a player,” said Schmid.
