In the European League, the handball team from Frisch Auf Göppingen won the next game against Tatran Presov.
The away game on Tuesday (February 21, 2023) at the club from eastern Slovakia ended with a 28:26 (13:10) win for the fourteenth place in the Handball Bundesliga. As a result, Göppingen was able to defend its second place in Group A of the European League, and the club had already qualified for the round of 16. The best thrower of the team from Baden-Württemberg was Josip Sarac with five goals in front of around 20 traveling Frisch-Auf fans.
Baur: “Too many missed chances”
“We had difficulties initially because we missed too many chances,” said Göppingen’s coach Markus Baur. “But our defense was good and behind them was a strong goalkeeper Marin Sego. After we took the lead, we controlled the game in the second half.”
The early stages of the game were indeed characterized by good goalkeepers on both sides. Above all, Presov’s Marcos Vinicios Colodeti quickly put his stamp on the game with a few saves. The result: after seven and a half minutes only four goals had been scored (2:2).
Schiller gets his team ran again
The hosts then pulled away a bit for the first time, pulling away to 5:2 (10th minute). But Göppingen tried not to let the gap get bigger – on the contrary: Marcel Schiller managed to equalize again with the 6:6 (15th).
An offensive spectacle did not want to develop as a result. A time-out was finally needed on the part of the guests in order to at least increase the efficiency of the opposing circle: Coach Baur shook his team awake with a short but very crisp speech and encouraged his players to better exploit chances. With success. On the way to Göppingen’s 13:10 half-time lead, Axel Goller (9:8, 23rd) and again Schiller (11:8, 27th) scored goals.
Hermann sets the course for Güppingen to win
After the change of sides, Frisch Auf had almost completely discarded his harmlessness in attack. Had Baur made it clear again in his cabin speech? With the 19:15 (42nd) and the 22:17 by Tobias Ellebæk (46th), the people from Göppingen even gained a six-goal advantage: Till Hermann’s goal to 25:19 (50th) set the course set for victory. The final score: 28:26.
