Handball European Championship: DHB duo elected to the All-Star team

A special honor for two DHB professionals: goalkeeper Andreas Wolff and playmaker Juri Knorr made it into the all-star team at the European Handball Championships.

The European Handball Federation announced this on Sunday. There are also three players from the Bundesliga in the best team: the Swedish left winger Hampus Wanne (Flensburg) and the Danes Mathias Gidsel (Berlin) and Magnus Saugstrup (Magdeburg).

The French backcourt player Nedim Remili was named the most valuable player of the tournament (MVP) after the final between France and Denmark (33:31 after extra time). Gidsel and the Portuguese Martim Costa became the best European Championship scorers with 54 goals each.

For Wolff, it is the second nomination at a European Championship after 2016, when the German team won the title thanks to his saves. In addition, like Knorr, the keeper was elected to the all-star team at the World Cup a year ago.

For three days, fans online had the opportunity to cast a vote for their favorites from the six suggestions for each position. In the end, 40 percent of the fans’ opinions were taken into account in the result, with the remaining 60 percent, as usual, in the hands of EHF experts.

DHB captain Johannes Golla, right winger Timo Kastening and backcourt player Julian Köster, who were also on the shortlist of EHF suggestions, were not chosen for the team. Costa, the Austrian right winger Robert Weber and France’s pivot Ludovic Fabregas are among those honored.

The all-star team of the Euro 2024:

Backcourt left: Martim Costa (Portugal)

Back center: Juri Knorr (Germany)

Backcourt right: Mathias Gidsel (Denmark)
