Handball EM 2022: Twice grade five: DHB skeleton troop smashes in Spain

The mixed DHB selection was able to keep up against Spain until half-time, after which it fell apart. It was the weakest game of the Germans so far.

Despite three victories in the preliminary round, the German handball players went into the duel against Spain as blatant outsiders.

And the hard-boiled defending champions from southern Europe drove a sovereign 29:23 victory against a DHB selection that made too many play errors and poorly played attacks. The outstanding Spanish goalkeeper Gonzalo Perez de Vargas (16 saves) did the rest.

Backcourt player Christoph Steinert spoke on ARD about the “worst game” of the tournament so far. And he was right. Even if the many Corona cases left a rather uncoordinated team on the floor, some problems were avoidable.

But not all players disappointed, especially two substitutes played well in the second round and made sure that the defeat was not too high.
