Handball: Crisis at THW Kiel continues to worsen

Setback for the German record champions, next triumph for the defending champions: SC Magdeburg continued its successful run in the Champions League and celebrated its third victory in a row.

Coach Bennet Wiegert’s team struggled, but ultimately prevailed clearly against FC Porto with 37:33 (18:17). Meanwhile, THW Kiel suffered its first defeat in the premier class.

Filip Jicha’s team lost 30:34 (16:19) when they met Norwegian star player Sander Sagosen at Kolstad Handball and thus lost the lead in Group A to Paris St. Germain. The French champion with the same number of points is THW’s next opponent in the premier class on October 26th.

Kiel’s best thrower was right winger Niclas Ekberg with ten goals, while Sigvaldi Gudjonsson was the most successful on the opposing side with ten goals as well. Backcourt player Sagosen, who left THW in the summer, scored eight goals.

The THW had previously kept a clean slate with four wins from four games. Now it put the first setback in the premier class for the North Germans, who have had a mixed season in the Bundesliga so far. Kiel recently suffered a defeat at SC DHfK Leipzig (34:35) and is in eighth place with just four wins from eight games.

Things are going better for Magdeburg in third place in the domestic league. In the Champions League, the SCM, for whom backcourt player Omar Ingi Magnusson scored nine times against Porto, is in fourth place in Group B.
