Handball Champions League: SC Magdeburg with a work win against Wisla Plock

As of: February 15, 2024 10:40 p.m

SC Magdeburg celebrated a victory at the restart in the Champions League and defended second place in Group B. Against the Polish representative Orlen Wisla Plock there was a 28:22 (13:14) on Thursday evening in front of 6,020 spectators. For the SCM it was the 30th game without defeat in a row across all competitions.

SCM is having a hard time – Plock is outnumbered

Without the injured Gisli Kristjansson and Janus Dadi Smarason, the SCM played with Felix Claar as the only playmaker, but struggled especially in defense. Plock gained a small lead (7:4/11.) and put Magdeburg under pressure. The SCM equalized (9:9/20.), but missed too many attacks to turn the game around before the break. The red card for Plock’s Gergö Fazekas after an elbow hit didn’t change that.

The turning point comes with Portner

During the break, Nikola Portner came into the Magdeburg goal and made a save, which was followed by Magdeburg’s first lead (15:14/32.). Defensively, Magdeburg was now better in the game and was able to extend its lead to three goals (19:16/39.). In what was still a close game, the SCM, with the now better goalkeeping performance behind them, had the decisive advantage and won the game. Lukas Mertens and Tim Hornke were Magdeburg’s best goalscorers with six goals each.
