The German handball champion SC Magdeburg suffered a setback in the fight for second place in Group A of the Champions League.
After a poor first half, Magdeburg lost to the Polish runner-up Wisla Plock by 24:25 (10:14). Gisli Kristjansson was the best Magdeburg shooter with seven goals, the SCM remains in third place in the table.
Magdeburg struggled in the first game without the two long-term injured Omar Ingi Magnusson and Magnus Saugstrup, especially in attacking positions. In particular, the 19-year-old Marcel Jastrzebski in the goal of the hosts took away some free throws from the SCM. “The only problem is our graduation rate,” said coach Bennet Wiegert during a break. But by the break, the gap had even increased.
After the break, Magdeburg gradually reduced the gap (15:17/37.), because substitute Mike Jensen also saved a few balls in goal. In defense and attack, however, the SCM lacked practice and a matter of course – and Plock drew back to four goals (16:20/40.). Magdeburg fought back and equalized four minutes from time, but Plock scored again and sealed the defeat.
