After a weak start in the Champions League, the defending champions are back on track. SC Magdeburg clinched their next victory in Montpellier and remains on the heels of the top teams.
Bennet Wiegert’s team won the French runner-up with 28:25 (12:14). With the fourth win in a row, the SCM remains within striking distance of second place in the group, which leads directly to the quarter-finals.
Magnusson misses two seven meters
The SCM had a hard time getting into the game and was down 4-1 after five and a half minutes. But the Elbestadters quickly got back together and equalized in the eleventh minute thanks to the strong Felix Claar. Omar Ingi Magnusson missed two seven meters during the phase. Matthias Musche even gave the SCM a 6:5 lead before the guests lost the thread. Montpellier went on a 4-0 run and Bennet Wiegert called a timeout. There was little of the usual Magdeburg combination game to be seen, the French stood disciplined in front of their goal and closed the middle. Janus Smarason came. And the new addition stood out. The Icelander scored two goals from the backcourt and brought the defending champions back into the game (11:11, 26th minute). Because of two late goals before halftime, we still went into the locker room with a two-goal deficit.
SC Magdeburg struggled for a long time in Montpellier, but still managed their fourth win in a row in the Champions League.
Smarason stabs
The Wiegert team caught up quickly, Claar scored a brace and the score was 15:15 (33rd minute). The game remained close, if not particularly attractive. The two top teams largely neutralized each other. In the 42nd minute, Arthur Lenne was shown red after hitting Claar in the face with his arm. As a result, the hosts lost the thread a bit, Magdeburg took the lead for the first time with two goals through Smarason at 20:18 (44th). The guests from Saxony-Anhalt defended their lead and remain within striking distance of Veszprem and Barcelona, who occupy the first two places in Group B and will meet directly on Thursday (October 26th). In addition to the strong Smarason (five goals), Matthias Musche impressed with six goals.
