THW Kiel continues to struggle in the Champions League. In the fifth group game, the handball players from the Förde conceded their third defeat on Thursday and were badly defeated at 30:38 (15:20) in Nantes.
After the bankruptcies in Celje and Kielce, the German record champions had nothing to gain from the previously unbeaten leaders of the French league. With four points from five games, Schleswig-Holstein remain fifth in Group B and now have to look down rather than up.
THW trainer Filip Jicha did not have a trained left winger available in Nantes. Rune Dahmke and Magnus Landin are still injured, temporary professional Malte Voigt has not received a release from his employer. Playmaker Miha Zarabec had to help out on the wing again. Not optimal and against a strong Nantes, who bought the cutting from Kiel, a handicap that made itself felt.
Five goals behind after 30 minutes were perfectly fine. At THW there was a lot of piecemeal offensively and in defense it was thanks to goalkeeper Tomas Mrkva that the French did not score more than 20 goals.
Rubdown in the second half
After the change of sides, it became even clearer. Kiel was completely off the roll, acted unfocused and without structure. Nantes sped up and away with their frenetic fans at their backs. After 49 minutes, the French were leading by 13 goals – 35:22. The game was over, Kiel had no chance of a comeback that day.
After all: The “Zebras” can now catch their breath a little, only have to get back on the plate next Wednesday – again in the Champions League at home against Aalborg. A win is then a must for Schleswig-Holstein.
