THW Kiel won the top game in the Handball Bundesliga. The “Zebras” won on Saturday evening (11/19/2022) at the champion SC Magdeburg with 34:33 (19:16).

The final phase of the game, in which Kiel had been ahead by six goals at times, was exciting again: 39 seconds before the end it was only 33:32 for THW, who were also outnumbered after Patrick Wiencek received a red card. Nikola Bilyk scored to 34:33, but Magdeburg came close to a goal from the throw-off. But it wasn’t enough for Magdeburg in the rousing final phase.

“Magdeburg caused us a lot of problems, but we prevailed. I’m enormously proud of the boys,” said THW coach Filip Jicha in Sportschau, emphasizing his strong backfield axis with Bilyk and Eric Johansson.

The THW continues with two home games, which on paper could hardly be more different. On Thursday (6.45 p.m.) Champions League winners FC Barcelona will be coming to the Förde, three days later (2 p.m.) Kiel will welcome newly promoted Bundesliga club VfL Gummersbach.

Kiel almost flawless in the first half

The game offered the 6,600 spectators in the sold-out hall the thrilling duel they had expected from the start. The “Zebras” not only made up for the quick 0:2 deficit after four minutes, but thanks to Niclas Ekberg’s 50th goal of the season and a goal by Harald Reinkind they also took the lead with two goals (5:3/9.).

Although the hosts were able to draw again in the meantime (9:9/17.), THW showed a strong defensive and offensive performance in the first half of the game – especially in the backcourt: A brace from Johansson and a goal from Bilyk ensured for the guests’ first three-goal advantage (20./12:9). Magdeburg’s keeper Nikola Portner, who parried a shot by Patrick Wiencek just before the break (30’/16:19), was responsible for the fact that this didn’t even increase to four goals.

Johansson meets in front, Landin closes behind

But seconds after the restart, Johansson scored the 20th goal for Kiel, who even extended their lead to five goals after 35 minutes (23:18). The Magdeburgers couldn’t get through against the THW defense block – if they did, there was still a Niklas Landin in the goal, who saved one or the other free throw of the SCM.

Kiel played mercilessly efficiently: three Johansson goals in a row made for a 26:18 lead (40th). Was that the preliminary decision? Not yet, because the hosts also had a 3-0 run and came back a bit. THW coach Jicha swore his team to the final phase during a break (“stay brave”). Now Hendrik Pekeler also had a few minutes and tried to help to keep the lead. Which didn’t quite work – but in the end it was just enough for the THW.
