Handball Bundesliga: SC DHfK Leipzig loses the start against Foxes Berlin

The handball players from SC DHfK Leipzig started the new Bundesliga season with a defeat. In the home game against Füchse Berlin on Monday evening, the Saxons had to admit defeat by 29:31 (13:15) despite a big fight.

4,168 spectators saw a balanced start, with the hosts immediately punishing ball losses. Neither team was able to gain more than one goal in the first 20 minutes (8:9/20). As the game progressed, however, the foxes’ defense became more and more secure and compact. The SC DHfK found it difficult to find open throwing positions and the Berliners were able to win more balls. After a 5:1 run by the guests, Leipzig was already behind 13:9 after 26 minutes, but fought back to two goals before the break.

Two dismissals after the break – DHfK catching up remains unrewarded

After the change, coach Runar Sigtryggsson’s team struggled again. The foxes used the weak phase and pulled away to 19:14. After that it got hectic. In the 40th minute, Berlin’s Mijajlo Marsenic received his third two-minute penalty and was red, just over a minute later Leipzig’s Maciej Gebala saw a straight red after a punch in the face by Gidsel. Through this phase, Leipzig came better and shortened to 22:23. It stayed tight until the end. In the dramatic final phase, however, the foxes finally brought the narrow victory to the finish line. The best DHfK thrower was Luca Witzke (7). For the Berliners, Lasse Andersson (9), Mathias Gidsel (8) and Jerry Tollbring (7) scored the most.
