SC Magdeburg takes an important step towards first place in the handball Bundesliga with a win against leaders Füchse Berlin. The SCM won the top game on Sunday (March 10, 2024) in its own hall with 31:28 (16:15) and is now one minus point less than the Füchse.
In a fighting game, Magdeburg went into the break with a narrow 16:15 lead. From the 40th minute onwards, the SCM started to pull away in front of the home crowd. At 23:19 by pivot Magnus Saugstrup (43rd), the lead was four goals for the first time.
In an overall nervous game, Berlin fought its way back a bit, but in the end it wasn’t decisive. Host Magdeburg didn’t give up the game at 28:24 (50′), thanks to a strong Sergey Hernandez (4 saves) in goal in the final phase. Berlin failed to make the last three throws and suffered its third defeat of the season.
With 40:6 points, Magdeburg is still behind the capital team (41:7) in the table with one game less, but has its sights on first place. The best thrower for the SCM was cyclist Saugstrup, who hit all five of his throw attempts. Lasse Andersson contributed eight goals for Berlin.
Flensburg-Handewitt wins against Göppingen
Previously, pursuers SG Flensburg-Handewitt had achieved a victory against Frisch Auf Göppingen. With 35:30 (17:16) on Sunday afternoon, Flensburg consolidated third place in the table.
Göppingen’s Marcel Schiller was the best scorer of the game with eight goals, followed by Flensburg’s Emil Jakobsen with seven goals.
